How the Crafty Blinders came to be

The Crafty Blinders name came about as a play on words we bought our donor van from Hull after two years of looking, in fact there’s a little story behind that.

I am by default an early riser and when looking for a new vehicle I have a routine as soon as I wake up, I would check the website for new vehicle listings and the same before going to bed doing this means I’m not looking at the same vehicles a hundred times.

On the morning in question I saw the holy grail of van a metallic grey 2016 VW crafter one of the last old shape vans produced with 70000 miles on the clock full service history with 3 more services paid for, 1 owner and it was clean really clean baring a couple of minor dents and dings it was a Blue Motion model with a Euro 6 engine fitted with aircon and cruise control, I couldn’t believe my luck so automatically without thinking I was on the phone “Hi I’m calling about the van you have for sale is it still available”  “ what time is it “ replied a croaky woman’s voice looking at my phone I then realised it was just after 5:30 am “I’m sorry I’ve just realised the time I do apologise it's 5:30 am” “of course it's still for sale it the middle of the night” was the unhappy response I got back down the phone, not letting this put me off I asked if I could come and look at the van, I explained the distance we would need to travel so asked if I could pay a deposit to hold the van so no one else could buy it? the response was No! “we’re away on holiday and not back until Sunday you can come look at it then” was the response! No way I’ve found the van I’ve been searching for 2 years and someone else is going to buy it I was so disappointed I explained the situation how long I had been looking and how this model spec and colour would make the perfect van for my first major self-build project

She threw me a lifeline “ I promise you no one will see the van before you do on Sunday” I offered a deposit again and it was declined again, it was Thursday morning I’ve found my holy grail van and have to wait 4 days to buy it, this was by far the longest 4 days of my life, the rest is history as they say, the seller was true to her word and on Sunday afternoon I bought my first ever VW Crafter for £10,000 in what was described on the day as a blinding deal, I can't remember who said it or how it came about, possibly a slip of the tongue but the words it’s blinding little Crafter was mentioned, I spent a four hour drive home with those words firmly stuck in my head, not long after The Crafty Blinders YouTube channel was created
